Uma vez que não possuem oxigénio disponível, transferem os electrões que obtêm por consumo (oxidação) de compostos orgânicos para o eléctrodo. Entretanto, o cátodo está exposto a oxigénio. Aí, os electrões, o oxigénio, bem como os protões combinam-se para formar somente água.
